2010 Symposium and Exhibition on Chinese American History, 1870-1945

Josephine Lai

Symposium

The First Annual Symposium on Chinese American Immigrant History in Southern Arizona, titled “Watching the Same Moon“, will be held on Saturday, September 25,2010 from 9 am to noon, at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, 1288 W. River Road, Tucson, AZ 85704. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. Registration is FREE for TCCC members and students, $5 for non-members.

The symposium will focus on the historical records as well as family accounts of the southward migration of Chinese immigrants to southern Arizona from northern California, mainly via the San Francisco Bay Area, and northward migration from Mexico, beginning in the 1800′s. The symposium will also present archeological archives and research findings on local circumstances of life of the Chinese after their arrival. We hope the symposium will paint a picture of how the Chinese American community began and thrived in this region, often despite much hardship and alienation.

Speakers will include historians (Evelyn Hu-Dehart, Grace Pena Delgado, Sylvia Sun Minnick, Li Yang), archeologist (Homer Thiel), and Mr. Lincoln Chin providing a personal account of his family’s history as immigrants.

The afternoon of September 25, 2010, will begin with celebrations of the Grand Opening of our first exhibition on Chinese American history, 1870-1945. First we will have a dim sum lunch. Meet the symposium speakers and also visit the book signing of the author of “A Poker Bride” (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2010), Mr. Christopher Corbett. Reservations for the lunch is included in the registration form. Cost of lunch: $10.

There will be a short oral history presentation (1:30 pm – 2 pm) by a number of young members of our community. The oral history project is a pilot program designed for youths interested in journalism and film (Director: Donny Tran).

The exhibition will include photo-archival materials of early Chinese immigrants, artifacts from grocery stores which were a major enterprise of Chinese immigrants during the early twentieth century, and a new collection of documents and artifacts featuring several members of our local WWII Chinese American veterans. We thank the Arizona Historical Society for partnering with us in this exhibition.

Guided tour of the exhibits will be available from 2 pm to 5 pm.
